Melissa Gerard is the Communications Manager at the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, where she leads all marketing, communications, and advocacy efforts in support of the organization’s mission. With more than a decade of experience in the nonprofit sector, Melissa brings a comprehensive background in communications, marketing, fundraising, volunteer management, and community engagement.
At the Foundation, Melissa oversees all aspects of marketing and communications, including website design and management, social media strategy, email communications, and graphic and video design. She also serves as the lead for two of the organization’s flagship initiatives—Mesothelioma Awareness Day and the International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma—coordinating messaging, outreach, and engagement for audiences worldwide.
In addition to her communications leadership, Melissa directs the Foundation’s advocacy efforts, working with national and state governments as well as civil and community groups to advance policies that support mesothelioma patients, families, and research.
Melissa holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising and nonprofit administration from Western Kentucky University and is deeply committed to using strategic storytelling and advocacy to drive impact and awareness in the mesothelioma community.
When she isn’t working, Melissa can usually be found carting her boys between a lacrosse pitch and a hockey rink, playing with her dog, Maisie, or curled up with a good book. An avid reader and lifelong creative, she’s always willing to try just about any craft project.
