Since 2008, the Department of Defense has funded mesothelioma research through its Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program – more specifically, through the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP). The PRCRP appropriation of $115,000,000 will be allocated toward 20 topic areas, including mesothelioma. To date, mesothelioma investigators have received over $20 million in awards to advance their research. Thanks to advocacy by the Foundation, mesothelioma was added as an eligible topic area for funding in 2008. The Foundation advocates annually for its continued inclusion. All mechanisms of funding within the program are now open and accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2021.
