MesoTV: Vaccinations for mesothelioma patients with Sean Drake, MD

Sean Drake, MD provides an overview of vaccinations — tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, pneumonia, pneumovax, prevnar 13, shingles, shingrix, influenza (flu), and the ongoing trials for a Covid-19 vaccine — as they relate to mesothelioma patients.

He also discusses vaccinations’ timing relative to chemotherapy or surgery. Mesothelioma patients should get their vaccinations prior to surgery or chemotherapy. If already undergoing chemotherapy, a patient should speak with their oncologist.

Dr. Drake wraps the interview with special considerations for those who have had a splenectomy (spleen removal), those having thoracic surgery, and those living in the same household as a mesothelioma patient.

An internist at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI, Dr. Drake is the brother-in-law of Bill Ziegler, a mesothelioma warrior and member of our Board of Directors.
