Alternative vs complementary therapies in new MesoTV video

Massage is a type of complementary therapy

For MesoTV, we brought back a valuable conversation about complementary vs alternative therapies from a previous conference on malignant mesothelioma in New York City.

In this presentation, Dr. Kathleen Wesa explains how complementary therapies — those used with mainstream medical care — and alternative therapies — those used instead of mainstream medical care — relate to mesothelioma treatment. She also discusses the importance of a balanced diet and exercise routine for patients with mesothelioma.

The topic of alternative vs complementary therapies is often fueled by lack of effective treatments in mesothelioma. However, patients should be aware that certain therapies can undermine traditional treatment. For example, antioxidants, which are touted by nutritionists, can make chemotherapy less effective in a cancer patient. Sometimes, such interventions can be harmful in and of itself.

As a general rule, when evaluating any kind of therapy, including alternative vs. complementary treatment patients and their caregivers, experts advise to consult published, peer-reviewed literature. Preferably they can do so with advice of their physician or another trusted expert who understands how to interpret such data.

Thank you to the support of sponsors who have stepped up during this difficult time. They ensure that we can continue serving the mesothelioma community and who made this MesoTV interview possible.
