This is our second installment highlighting our 2019 Fundraise for Meso events. Read the first recapping our long-standing fundraisers held for five years or longer and the third recapping inaugural fundraisers.
Below, we highlight and recognize those events benefiting the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation that have been ongoing for two, three and four years. They include the George Dreith “Fight Against Meso” Golf Scramble, the Mother’s Day Weekend Meso Run, the Albert Amigoni “Grand Poobah” Open,the Miles for Meso: Washington Memorial 5K Run/Walk, the Late Summer Luau, the Mesothelioma Race for Justice, The Em’ for Emily Golf Tournament and the Kick Out Mesothelioma 5-Miler & 2.5 Mile Walk.

George Dreith “Fight Against Meso” Golf Scramble – Alison Dreith & Tyler Dreith

The George Dreith “Fight Against Meso” Golf Scramble, now in its fourth year, is organized by Alison Dreith & Tyler Dreith in memory of their father, George Dreith. This year, the event had 27 teams (108 golfers) and raised $3,369.
Mother’s Day Weekend Meso Run – Julia Forgie

The Mother’s Day Weekend Meso Run, now in its second year, is organized by Julia Forgie in memory of her mother, Patty, who passed away from peritoneal mesothelioma on May 4, 2017, just one week before Mother’s Day. The run honors active, outdoor enthusiast Patty by taking place on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend and on a trail in a park. This year’s run raised $12,250.
Albert Amigoni “Grand Poobah” Open – Tina Amigoni Meza & Jason Heil
Briardale Greens Golf Course | Euclid, OH

The Albert Amigoni “Grand Poobah” Open, now in its third year, is organized by Tina Amigoni Meza and Jason Heil in memory of Tina’s father, Albert Amigoni. Despite the rain, this year’s open had 99 golfers, over 40 raffle items and raised $8,000.
Miles for Meso: Washington Memorial 5K Run/Walk – Doug Nelson
Federal Way, WA

Originally started in 2012 by Pat Dyhrman, Diana Stewart, and Pat Hatley, the Miles for Meso: Washington Memorial 5K Run/Walk was taken over in 2018 by Doug Nelson, Community Center Manager of the city of Federal Way, Washington. This year’s 4th of July run raised $17,662.48.
Late Summer Luau – The Gori Law Firm
Edwardsville City Park | Edwardsville, IL

A twist on their annual Oktoberfest fundraiser, The Gori Law Firm partnered with Global Brew Tap House for a Late Summer Luau featuring live music, local food from area restaurants, craft beer, a rock-climbing wall, a dunk tank, a tiki-themed escape room and a raffle. This year’s luau raised $30,000.
Mesothelioma Race for Justice – Mirela Kopier & Vogelzang Law

The Mesothelioma Race for Justice, now its second year, is organized by Mirela Kopier and Vogelzang Law. This year’s trail 5K race had 130 runners and raised $14,345.15.
The Em’ for Emily Golf Tournament – Jack & Ellen Brown

The Em’ for Emily Golf Tournament, now in its third year, is organized by Jack and Ellen Brown in memory of their daughter, Emily Brown Kocis, who passed away from mesothelioma in 2017. The golf tournament, which includes lunch, a BBQ dinner and a silent auction, was one part of the week-long fundraiser. The Browns also hosted a “dine and donate” at SBH BBQ in Greer, SC on Mesothelioma Awareness Day (Sept. 26) and the Ride for the Em’ cycling event at CycleBar Greenville. This year’s event raised $20,000.
Kick Out Mesothelioma 5-Miler & 2.5 Mile Walk in memory of John W. Griffin – Tony Myatt

The Kick Out Mesothelioma 5-Miler & 2.5 Mile Walk is organized by Tony Myatt in memory of his friend John W. Griffin, who passed away from mesothelioma in 2003. This year’s run had 26 runners, 103 walkers and raised $2,750.
