Consider Prevention Before Beginning Your Next Home Project

Home Repair

Home RepairWhether you received new tools over the holidays or have established a New Year’s resolution to finally start the home renovations you have been putting off, we want to first remind you about the dangers of asbestos and proper safety measures to consider before you begin working.

It is not uncommon for homes, especially those built before 1980, to contain asbestos particles in floor tiles, insulation, ceilings, roof shingles, siding, or other areas where the fiber was commonly used in the past. The dangers of asbestos in the home arise when the asbestos particles become airborne. Any situation that may stir up dust can disturb the particles that may then be inhaled. If you suspect the presence of asbestos in your home, you may want to consider a home inspection before you begin your project.

Taking proper safety measures before and during your project will minimize the risk of exposure to you and those around you. Using the “STOP – LOOK – THINK” approach that utilizes situational awareness techniques will ensure that you consider the environment before you act, are aware of any possible hazards, and know the risks and use the proper safety equipment and measures.

Asbestos exposure has been linked to the development of respiratory disease, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. No amount of exposure is deemed safe and there is a 20 to 50 year latency period between exposure and the development of mesothelioma.

At the Meso Foundation, we believe that prevention of exposures to asbestos and other known carcinogens associated with the development of mesothelioma will contribute to the eradication of mesothelioma and its effects on human life. Click here to learn more about our prevention program.
